New Year, new game (not)

No, I'm not dead. I'm still playing online. I've gotten my kill/death ration in Black Ops II up to .88 (it was at .87 before I got sick then it dipped to .83 while sick). I have been playing and I wanted to start a new game (new to me at least) on New Year's Day but I ran into problems. The disc is scratched and I could barely got out of training. Now I can't start the first mission. The game is Assassin's Creed. Yep, that's right. It's the first one. I got the achievement for finishing the training back in November 2007. I'm pretty sure that's about the time the game came out. Before I never really got much further than the training. I'm going to try buffing the disc and see if that helps. If not I'll see if I can borrow my brother's disc to play until I get back the point where the scratch is. Happy New Year to me.

New Poll - posting schedule/New Year Resolutions

So I have a new poll up. It's related to the New Year Resolutions I've been trying to nail down over the last couple of days. Here it is:

How many times should I post an entry on my blog (per week)?

1
2
3
4
5

This is where you get to tell me what to do (and in theory I should do it). One of my goals will be related to this blog and I'm trying to figure out how many times I should post. Just know that "every day" is completely out of the question. Even I don't have that much to say. There have been some times where I've wanted to post daily or even hourly but then I wonder if anyone reads it or even cares. I know my friends occasionally come on and read things but if I posted more regularly then maybe they'd read more regularly. Like today might have multiple entries. Partly because I'm bored. But partly because I haven't been keeping things up like I want to. Besides I've got to tell you all to stop yelling at me somehow, don't I?

Pity the failure that I am

So I didn't make it. I was 234 points away from breaking the 10,000 point barrier with my gamer score. Yet another New Years Resolution I didn't achieve. And to think I was one boss battle from picking up 125 points in Lost Odyssey. So close, and yet so far.

I not only failed at getting the score but I failed at playing Lost Odyssey. I got into an area that I couldn't handle. The regular enemy encounters were killing me . . . literally. I fled like the little coward that I am. I love that game, but it got to a point where all I wanted to do was rip the disk from the drive and chuck it out the window. Maybe this weekend I'll take some time to focus on the game and strategies to help me survive instead of rushing through it to get points. Besides, if I finish the game then I can go back to Blue Dragon.

When my attempt to get gamer points from Lost Odyssey failed I started playing Gears of War on insane. I figured if I could get achievements for finishing chapters on insane I would also get the achievements for hardcore as well. Doubling up is always nice. It didn't work out that way so the clock turned over past midnight and I was at the same gamer score I had the night before.

Now if I had spent some time playing those games earlier in the week instead of playing Gears of War 2 with my friends I might have met my goal and finally cross one resolution off my list. But you see, I like playing with my friends. As crazy and emotional as they sometimes tend to get, they're a bunch of real stand up guys. So I blame my failure on them. Yeah, that's it. It's all their fault. If they would just act like jerks so I wouldn't want to play with them then maybe I'd actually achieve a goal I set for myself. I'd like to try and see them be a jerk . . . without laughing about it either.

There are a lot of other New Year Resolutions that I didn't achieve either. I still haven't finished Final Fantasy VII, Mario Sunshine, Summoner or Jedi Outcast like I've been trying to do as a challenge with my brother dain. I guess those should be on my resolution list this year as well. Oh well. I guess my resolution of world peace didn't quite work out either.

With all the house/moving stuff that's been my life the last couple of months I haven't given it any thought about what my 2009 resolutions should be. When I get a chance I'll review where I came up short with my 2008 ones and see what dreams/goals I want to complete this year. Does anyone have any Prozac they could share?

Bah Humbug!

I realized last night while getting ready for bed that I haven't wrapped my Christmas presents yet. Since I will need to deliver them tomorrow on my way home from work that gives me tonight to wrap them all. Can I tell you how much I hate wrapping presents? I'm terrible at it. Especially those gifts that are oddly shaped or have gaps in the packaging. Besides, you go through all that trouble just to have someone rip it right off anyway. They only time they notice your hard work is when you tape it up so much they can't even get into it. I've got a ton of presents to wrap tonight so who knows when I'll be able to get on and play. I only have 310 points to go and just over a week. I need all the play time I can get at this point.

I think I can, I think I can

Okay, I only need 439 more gamer points to reach 10,000. And since it was a New Year Resolution to do it this year that means I have only 13 days left to get that 439 points. Which comes out to 33.77 points per day. So, um, if you know any easy/fast/lazy achievements I can pick up before the end of the month I would appreciate the help. And no, I won't be playing Avatar. I think I can do it without that particular game, thank you very much.

I've been robbed!

I've been robbed! But I'm over it now.

I mentioned that I started a blog for my Xbox 360 at www.360voice.com. Your Xbox 360 "writes" entries based on how you've used, or not used, the system each day. While I know I'm not going to be the best player out there, I knew there was one thing I could be good at. Playing every day and maintaining a continuous streak.

With my recent move I wasn't sure how I was going to maintain my streak. My internet connection was still hooked up at my apartment, but my TV and all my furniture was moved to my new house. For two days I took my system over to my parent's house (much to my mother's dismay) and hooked up and got online. Sometimes I played for an hour or so. Sometimes I just logged in, opened up a game and played for five minutes. Just long enough for the system to register that I was online and playing (even if I only had the game up in the menus). It was enough for me.

Once I got everything up and running at my new place I could go back to my regularly scheduled gaming habit. My mom was relieved. And for awhile everything was working just fine. That was until Thanksgiving.

I spent a lot of the day at my parents for the big turkey dinner. I didn't get home that night until 10pm, but there was still plenty of time to play games. I booted my system up and played Gears of War 2 with my friends. I don't know if that was the night we played late, or if after a couple of matches everyone went to bed and I decided to watch a movie in my Xbox 360 before going to bed. Either way I played that night just like every night previously for the last 244 days (according to my 360's blog). But something happened and I was about to get robbed.

It wasn't until Saturday when I was playing around on my computer that I decided to go read my 360's blog and see where my ranking was for my continuous streak. When I checked the numbers my ranking was down in the 40,000s instead of the 190s range I was at before. What happened? I went back and read through all my entries and found out that the entry for the Thanksgiving holiday said I hadn't played at all. That can't be right. I played. I ALWAYS play.

But there it was in black and white. My streak was gone. My badge was gone. My rank was gone. I was robbed.

I didn't know what to do. I didn't know if there was someone I could contact to correct the problem. I was livid. After all my hard work and stress about keeping my streak going during the whole moving process only to have my streak ended in what was obviously a glitch in the system. I wanted to rip someone's head off (now you know why I like snapping the neck of a meat shield in Gears 2). I was so mad I wanted to chuck my 360 into my swimming pool. But I didn't. I walked away. Let myself cool off. And THEN started snapping people's necks.

It's been a week and a half since then and I've come to turns with it. I've cooled down enough to wonder if it really matters in the long run. I mean, any idiot can turn their Xbox 360 on every day and get a continuous streak going. There's no skill involved other than pushing a button and logging in. So I play video games every day. Do I really need a badge that lets everyone else know that? Probably not, because then I'll start to hear those "get a life" mutterings from every Tom, Dick and Harry I meet.

I just wanted to be good at something. Better than my peers. It's not going to happen in the games I play, with the people I play. So why not pick something I CAN do and maybe be better at than others. I know I have friends that play online every day too and if they had a blog at www.360voice.com they'd have a continuous streak just as long as mine. Maybe even longer. But for now, I had all my friends (who are on the site) beaten. Oh well.

Since my streak has been broken sometimes I haven't felt like getting online. What's the point? I don't have a streak I have to maintain any more. If I do get online I know I'm going to be wrapped up in a couple hours of game play. But now I've got a house that needs some attention and other hobbies that I'd like to spend some time doing. But not playing online makes me miss some of my friends. They can be a pain in the you-know-what but I love playing with them anyway.

Maybe getting robbed of my continuous streak was a good thing. Maybe I'll find the time to finish reading a book I started over the summer. Or get some more cross stitching done on the pattern I'm making for my mom. It's a large one and it would be nice to get it finished before she dies. (Not that she's going anywhere, it's just that big of a project.) Either way I'll still be playing video games. I can't image a life not playing video games. Besides I HAVE to play some move video games. I have a New Year's Resolution to break the 10,000 point barrier with my gamer score (I'm currently at 9,531) and I'm running out of time to do it in. So I'll see you online. Like always.

The NEW New Year Resolutions

Okay, with it being this far into the year can these really be called New Year Resolutions? Anyhoo! These are the next batch of Resolutions or goals or whatever you want to call them, that I hope to accomplish this year, or this quarter, this month, or whenever. Feel free to offer support or attempts to discourage me, whatever your personality dictates.

1. Finish Final Fantasy VII
2. Finish Lego Star Wars II
3. Finish Lego Star Wars: The Complete Sage
4. Finish BioShock
5. Break 10,000 point barrier with my gamer score

#1-4 should be easily doable (except for the undefeated flight missions in Lego Star Wars II). #5 on the other hand could take some doing. If I get close (and desperate) maybe I'll have to resort to Avatar: The Burning Earth. Here's hoping I don't have to. Cheers!

New Year Resolutions completed

Okay when I said this back in January I either had a low expectation of myself or I tapped into some awesome motivation to work on these New Year Resolutions:

My New Year's (Gaming) Resolutions:
1. Finish Final Fantasy VII.
2. Reach rank #55 & complete one level of Prestige in Call of Duty 4.
3. Raise my gamer score to 5,500 or more.

Well, I've already achieved 2 out of the 3 resolutions so now what do I do?

I reached the rank of #55, went through one level of Prestige and I'm on level 12 of my second level of Prestige. And I think scoring points is easier so I might blow through another level of Prestige or two this year as well (all depending on time spent playing other games of course). Sometime towards the end of last week I achieved 5,501 as a gamerscore. I have since added a few points to that total so I can cross that resolution off of the list.

The only resolution I haven't completed yet was finishing Final Fantasy VII. I haven't even connected my PS2 up this year so I've still got a ways to go on that one. Maybe I'll take this week and see if the PS2 still runs.

So now that I've already accomplished most of my resolutions what do I do? Should I set more? Maybe ones that I actually have to work towards and are a stretch? How about breaking that 10,000 point barrier with my gamerscore? Or finishing some disk games and maybe a couple of Arcade games? Or how about buying a PS3 and a DS Lite? I think I need to give this some thought before I make anything too official. But here are some of the contenders for "Mid-Year Resolutions" (since the year is no longer new):

1. gamerscore 10,000 or higher
2. finish BioShock/Lost Odyssey/Mass Effect/Legend of Legaia/Dark Cloud/Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits/Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade/Pikmin/or any number of games
3. finish Lego Star Wars II (those undefeated vehicle missions are going to be the death of me)
3. finish Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga (almost there anyway so why not)
4. all achievements Texas Hold 'Em
5. all achievements in Catan (but only if my internet connection behaves itself)
6. get ANY achievement in Rayman Raving Rabbids
7. all achievements in Uno/Root Beer Tapper/any other Arcade game
8. finish Gears of War on Hard

Any suggestions? And if you say "all of them" you better hope there isn't any good games coming out this year that are going to take up my time (excluding Rainbow 6: Vegas 2 and Gears of War 2 of course).
