I've been thinking a lot about a couple of things. Namely time and the shear number of video games I own. I would love to completely play them all but realistically it's not possible. So how do I decide which ones to play all the way through and which ones I play whenever with no expectation of finishing them.
I've been looking through my list of games and based on the influence a game has had on the industry and my experiences with it I've come up with a list of games that I own that I feel are a "must play" game. Meaning, this is a game that I want to tell everyone "I played that and finished it". I'm going through this one system at a time so some lists will be shorter or longer than others depending on how many games I own for that system. Maybe some day I'll make a list of must play games for games that I don't own (but will probably own them some day - I just can't stop buying them). But right now this is based on games that I OWN. Keep that in mind as you read this list. I've made some comments on some of them just because I can.
Playstation (original)
Abe's Oddysee
The beginning of the Oddworld games and their wonder irreverent style of gameplay. Farting and burping have never been as fun . . . or productive in video games.
Chrono Cross
Some people would say Chrono Trigger but I started playing this game first and I love the shear number of characters you can recruit and have in your party. It adds some strategy to what seems like a typical RPG. And the enemies can really mess with your strategy.
Crash Bandicoot
This mascot has been in quite a number of games. It should be interesting to see the game that started it all.
Descent
A Doom clone but this time you're in a ship. The game has true 6 axis movement which blew my mind when I played it for the first time. I don't know why I struggle to play the original Doom games but don't really have any problems navigating this game. It's the first game that made me think of games in a real three dimensional environment.
Final Fantasy Tactics
I have this game for my PSP and I actually like playing it more on that system than on the Playstation. I'm not sure why. But I first started playing it on this system and I love the amount of customization that you can do for your group as a whole and each individual character in your party. This is a game that I love to sit and just do random battles and not advance the story because I love it so much.
Final Fantasy VII
Everyone says this is the best Final Fantasy game. I disagree but you can read about that below. It has had such an influence on gamers and is being remade so it's definitely one that every games should play.
Final Fantasy IX
This is my favorite Final Fantasy games. Ever. The only one that comes close is Final Fantasy X and that isn't close to over take IX. I got so close to finishing this game before my stuff was robbed that I was heartbroken to have all that progress lost . . . until I realized that it meant I had to play it again and I was happy. One of the few games I was willing to say that about.
Grandia
This is an epic RPG that showed Final Fantasy didn't have a corner on the market for RPG games. And it spawned a couple of sequels in the franchise.
Legend of Dragoon
This is the first solo campaign that finished and got to the end credits. It was simply beautiful. And I cried. And it deserves a sequel more so than any other game I can think of. Somebody please make that happen.
Legend of Legaia
Discovering all the hidden special moves made this game really fun. It's so satisfying to see that you unlocked something just by pushing random button combinations. It helps give you a different take on combat too.
Metal Gear Solid
This is a game everyone should play. You can't deny how much of an impact it has had on the industry. But someone please explain to me the whole Metal Gear lore. I'm lost and clueless about it.
Rayman
Another mascot that has spawned several games. One of those games I'm playing and capturing now and it's killing me. Literally. Still fun. Another one where it's nice to see where everything started. And I remember when it came out and everyone was upset that he didn't have any legs or arms, but had hands and feet. Weird.
Spyro the Dragon
Another franchise game. Fun. Simple. I just wish the camera controls were better.
Threads of Fate
I think this is the first game that I played that switched between 2 main characters. I found it innovated. Probably wasn't the first game to do this, but it was the first for me that I remember.
Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation
Not the first Tomb Raider game but it's the first one I played. The controls have gotten much better since this one. It was nice to have a female protagonist instead them always being the damsel in distress, even if her boobs are unrealistically too large (this was before the age that plastic surgery and boob enhancements went wild). That girl must have so many back problems.
The only one on the list that I've actually finished is Legend of Dragoon. The rest are on my wish list to capture and post to me YouTube channel . . . some day. I might even replay Legend of Dragoon. It's that good of a game even if it doesn't hold up graphically very well these days.
What are the original Playstation games that you would say are "must play"? Maybe our lists have a couple duplicates. Tell me in the comments and why I should play them. Maybe if you're convincing enough I might go out and try to find a copy and play it. Influence me. I dare you.

New Year Resolutions
So today's the last day of the year and I'm still questioning whether or not I'll survive the year. I just can't get rid of this nasty cough. Oh well. This cold/mono/whatever has really whipped my ass. I got sick the week of Thanksgiving and I've been sick ever since, to varying degrees. It's the cough and extreme tiredness/exhaustion that I'm having the hardest time with.
But the sun keeps coming up and life goes on. And tomorrow is a new year.
With a new year comes New Year Resolutions. I make them every year, but I don't always complete them. Some last almost the whole year. Some are forgotten or given up on before the end of January. Either way, I like setting goals. It's fun and gives me an idea of what I want to accomplish in the next 12 months.
For starters, I have a lot of games. 854 to be exact. And that doesn't count my PC games, just console games. I have a really good inventory system. I kind of have to with all those games. Of all those games 435 are Xbox, Xbox Arcade or Xbox One games. Of those 435 I don't have any achievements in 167 of them. That's 38.39% of games with no gamer score. So one of my New Year Achievements is to get at least one achievement in all the games I own. That's a lot of games to play. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to get an achievement in all of them. I know, because I've tried in some of those games. Either way, I'm going to try.
Speaking of gamer score I think I want to get my gamer score at or above 40,000. I currently have 32,637 and I hope to get a couple more tonight before the new year rings in. That means I have to get 7,363 in 12 months. That's an average of 614 points a month. I think that's very doable. Especially if I'm going to be playing a lot of games. I know a lot of people don't care about achievements and gamer score, but I like to see what I've accomplished in the year besides just knowing I spent X amount of time playing video games. Besides some of those achievements might be hard to get.
I'd also like to complete (i.e. get to the end credits) of 12 games. That's one a month. Might be doable, but it will take some effort and planning to achieve. I'm not sure what those games might be, but I know that a couple of them should be Summoner (PS2), Jedi Outcast (Xbox), Super Mario Sunshine (GameCube) and Final Fantasy VII (PS) since those were the games that started this blog way back on March 2nd, 2007. That's a long time . . . 8 years exactly . . . and I still haven't finished those games. I have noticed that since I started my YouTube channel I've finished several games. That's promising.
The games that I'm the closest to finishing are:
Fable III
Final Fantasy XIII
Gears of War Ultimate Edition
Lost Odyssey
Psychonauts
Rayman Origins
Tomb Raider
Final Fantasy Tactics (PSP)
I think finishing these are doable. I wonder what other ones I can finish before the end of the year. Is there any games you'd like me to play and finish? I'm taking suggestions for my channel and for my New Year Resolutions. Just name something in the comments and I'll let you know if I've got it. If not, I might be able to pick it up. I did get a lot of games through Xbox's sale the last 2 weeks. Not that I needed more games. But they were cheap and I video games are so much fun.
Do you have any New Year Resolutions? If so, let me know in the comments. Maybe there will be something we can work on together.

A very prosperous weekend
It was a very prosperous weekend for me and my gamer score. And it all started innocently enough.
I noticed my brother had the achievement for downloading the winning skins for the game Kameo. I've been trying to get this for awhile, but stupid me I thought it was the winning game pics instead of skins. Now I've got a lot of Kameo game pics on my 360. Oh well. What I didn't realise is that it worth 0 points. Yep. Zilch. Nada. Nothing. I hate it when games do that. Even 5 points would make it worth it.
After my brother helped me figure that out I asked for his help in Tomb Raider: Legend where I was stuck. I knew he had gotten past this point because I've watched him play the game several times. That little bit of help lead to me getting 2 achievements in the game. It also gave me something much more priceless. Apparently when my brother played through the first level he missed quite a few of those bronze/silver rewards. Since he was there helping me I got the chance to pick them up where he missed them on his play through. The look on his face as I pick up one after another of those rewards was priceless.
After finishing Tomb Raider I put in Bioshock because my friend Zenra keeps telling me there's an easier way to take down the Big Daddies instead of fighting them. He said it would require a chat session while I played so when he jumped on I put the game in. He helped me walk through and get all those pesky items to mix the Lazarus formula to save the forest (this was another game I was stuck in). In the course of that run through I picked up 3 more achievements. And I was so involved in the story I hadn't even noticed when one of them popped up. And I live for the bleep.
I'm sure I might have picked up another achievement or two but I can't remember. It was a very productive day for me. And not just on the achievement front. I was able to get unstuck in 3 different games. The other game that I was stuck in was Lost Odyssey. I hate it when I get stuck in a game and can't figure out what I need to do to get past that point. Or even worse is when I know what I need to do but I just can't seem to pull it off, but keep dying instead. I'm still stuck in Portal, but I'll save that game for another time.
All in all I think it was a very productive day. I don't expect to have that happen every weekend when I can devote a lot more time to playing video games than I can during the week. But it's nice when it does happen. And I am starting to think that breaking the 10,000 point gamer score barrier is actually possible this year. Stay tuned.

Second chances
So I found the case for GRAW and I have initial plans to take it back today and get something else. But while looking for that case I also found the cases for Enchanted Arms and Lost Planet. Those are two other games where I haven't gotten very far (if anywhere) in them so I might want to give them a second look to see if it will be worth it to keep them.
I've started Enchanted Arms several times but I've just never been in the mood to sit through all that dialogue and crap at the beginning of the game before you get into it. My brother dain borrowed it and at least go to the battle tutorial before he quit. Maybe someday I'll set aside an hour or two and see if I can get the game started and get involved in it.
With Lost Planet I've only put the disk in my machine just to see if it would load up. Every time I get the desire to play the game someone tells me how hard it is and how screwy the controls are. Those are not encouraging words if someone is deciding to play the game. This is another game that might require a couple hours of commitment before I make a decision on whether to keep it or not.
Another game that is currently getting a second chance (more like a first since I haven't played it before) is Tomb Raider: Legend. I've watched my brother play this game many times and I have one of the previous Tomb Raider games for the PlayStation. This last Monday I finally figured out I should probably put the game in and see what's it's like for myself. I got stuck in the first level but not enough to discourage me and make me want to never see the game again. But just enough to make me want to put in something less aggravating.
Maybe this need to par down on my games comes from the guilt of owning games I haven't played or the fact that I don't have any more room in my game binder for the latest games I bought. The fact that Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey are both 4 disks each doesn't help. Not to mention all those Final Fantasy multi-disk games. Oh well. The straps are starting to rip so I'm going to have to buy a new case soon anyway. But it wouldn't hurt to clean out the dead games in order to have more money for new ones. Right?

Games I own, but haven't played
Until someone decides to pay me for doing nothing so I can stay home and play video games all day and not have to go to work, I think I'll always own some games that I've never played.
I'm not just talking about sequels I haven't played because I haven't finished playing the original, but other games. Games like Tomb Raider: Legend, Mass Effect and Enchanted Arms for Xbox 360; Doom 3, Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy and Stranger's Wrath for Xbox; Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters and Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth for PSP; Deux Ex: The Conspiracy, Half-Life and Onimusha for PS2; Chrono Trigger, Dragon Warrior VII, Grandia and Medal of Honor: Underground for PS. I have dabbled a little bit in all my Game Cube games but I think that's only because I don't have that many to begin with.
I made the mistake of admitting to some friends that I owned Mass Effect but haven't played it yet and boy did they rip me up and down for that. Okay, I get it and I'm sorry. That game is going to take some time to play instead of 20-30 minutes here and there. Right now that seems to be all the attention span I can handle for any one game. And then there are my friends who keep sending me invites to Call of Duty 4. I suck at the game. My deaths are 2x or 3x my kills, but I still enjoy playing with my friends and finally figuring some of the maps out.
So someday I need to just sit down and pick a game or two and start playing it. You would think the weekends would be perfect for that, but they're not. There's laundry to do, bathrooms to clean and dishes to wash. It's just as much work sometimes at home as it is in the office.
Eventually I will play those games and they can go from "owned, but not played" to "owned, but not finished". That's not much better but it's the best I can do.
